Paint Sprayer Reviews
Paint Sprayer Reviews
Are you looking into purchasing a paint sprayer for your home or business? If so it is more important than ever to get good paint sprayer reviews as all paint spraying units are not built the same. Led off for our pick for the best paint sprayer 2014, the Graco Magnum X5, our goal is to give honest reviews of paint guns and sprayers.
While none of us are looking to become the next Bob Vila, it is important to know and understand the different painting units on the market, so that we can make a good decision on what type of machine work best for a particular job.
As owner and operators of a professional painting company that has worked on everything from painting colleges and university buildings to kitchen cabinets, we have used hundreds of different models over the years. Besides this we work with hundreds of different contractors a year and are able to pick their brains on the products that they use.
Below is a list of our favorite paint sprayers for 2014 and some specs on each.
The sprayers above are just a few of the hundreds of models that are available to consumers today. While Graco and Campbell Hausfeld are two of the top models on today’s market, there are several other brands that have entered the niche and are creating quality products. One of the things that is most important when researching paint sprayer models is to pick one that best fits your needs. If you are looking to start a professional painting company you are going to look at a whole different group of models than someone that is just looking to spray paint their motorcycle or kitchen drawers. Also, those looking for portability will want to choose a portable sprayer over one that will be hard to transport in a smaller vehicle.
Things to Look for in finding the Best Paint Sprayer
Quality: Finding a quality paint spray unit is by far the most important part of the searching for paint sprayer reviews. Some lesser known companies will offer similar looking models than the top brands, but it often comes at a price. Many times these cheap paint machines will not only break down after only a few uses, but they will lack the spray power and coating power of the better sprayers on the market. Another thing that will often come from these models is an excessive amount of overspray, which can ruin a job.
Price: While quality is the first thing we look at when reviewing our sprayers, we can often find great deals among the different quality sprayers. For instance, with proper research and the use of online deals and promo codes, one can save up to 30% off a price of models that are both great as far as quality goes. With commercial paint spraying units this can be upwards of several hundred dollars for each model that you are buying.
Size: One thing that we cannot stress enough is to buy a machine that fits your project. If you are trying to paint the inside of your entire home, it is wise to avoid a small handheld model like the Wagner Power Sprayer when you can get something like the Graco Truecoat for just a little more money. The same is true the other way around because if you are just doing a small project there is no use buying a commercial sprayer that you will have no use for after doing your smaller job.
Accessories: It is important to pick and choose wisely when making a final purchasing decision based on the accessories that may or may not come with your paint sprayer. Many units that you purchase may come with very little of the accessories that you need and you will end up almost doubling your initial investment paying for these tools. Always, always, always check out the reviews online and the exact tools that you get with each sprayer, as some will leave out crucial tools that are needed for your job.
Reviews: We cannot stress enough about how important customer reviews are for purchasing your sprayer. Nearly 90% of the websites that you see online are geared towards selling a product. They will tell you all of the good things about a certain paint machine, but leave out some cons that they don’t want people to know about. To get a true reflection of your machine it is always wise to read through reviews sites like this one and Amazon to get a true reflection of what sprayer you will need.
Overall it is important to take a few days before making any spur of the moment decisions on the pain spraying unit that you will purchase. Doing your homework along with some simple paint sprayer reviews is a good way to make an educated decision. Making a bad decision during this process can result in plenty of time and money wasted as you will end up returning the item and setting your job back a few extra days, something that no one really has the time or energy for in this day and age.
Review of our Top 5 Paint Sprayer Models
In all honesty, we recommend all of the sprayers above as we have gone through and picked the cream of the crop from what we have reviewed. Within this website we will also review some “not so great” sprayers as we like to show both sides of the story. With that being said, we would like to cover our Top 5 paint sprayers for 2014.
Graco Magnum X5 Airless Paint Sprayer: The Graco Magnum X5 Airless Paint Sprayer is the top paint sprayer that we have tested this year. While this product isn’t recommended for constant use, it is a great product for those who do periodic large painting projects. We decided to test this product out over last summer after getting rave reviews from a local handyman at a group of condominiums that we were painting. After letting us test his out on the fencing that we were painting, we decided that we should get our own.
The best thing about this product is that it has a low price tag, but produces the quality of a commercial paint spraying machine. We were using a Wagner paint sprayer on the fences and often had to do two coats compared to one for this machine. Using this cut down our work time from approximately a 2 or 3 day project to one that was able to be done in one 10 hour shift. We highly recommend the Graco Magnum sprayer for handyman, home owners or anyone looking to do a few bigger projects a year.
Earlex HV5500 Spray Station: Another quality product that we highly recommend is the Earlex HV5500 Spray Station. Much like the Graco Magnum reviews, the Earlex review comes from someone that recommended this to us less then a year ago. The Earlex was being used by one of our contracting friends Al Douglas who is the owner of Big Al’s Painting. Al was using this to paint high vaulted ceilings in a number of new houses at a complex that was being built during early 2013.
When making our initial paint sprayer reviews, we had this neck and neck with the Graco Magnum but felt that the Graco was slightly better due to a better first coat. With the Earlex Spray station, we were able to cut down on the time for interior work by about 25% as most of the area was done with little need to repaint the next day. What we liked the best was that the coat went on thick and stayed that way over the course of the night and we did not have to repaint more than a couple corner spots the next day. Last but not least we like the pricing of this unit as we were able to get this unit for just around $300 with free shipping and handling. Overall I would rank this slightly below the Graco X5, but by only the slightest of margins.
Campbell Hausfeld HV2500 HVLP Paint Sprayer: As far as HVLP sprayers go this is one of my favorite and it comes at a good price. The problem with the HVLP type sprayers is that they range in price from under $200 to well over $1,000. Usually the lower costs ones are more of the cheaper sprayers on the market and don’t work well. For this product we rented one from the local Home Depot and decided to use it to paint some cabinets and drawers that we were installing in our garage.
After the initial cleaning and preparation we were able to paint over 25 cabinets in just under two hours. The HVLP sprayer worked great in getting all the sides painted, but we only had small troubles getting the nooks and crannies of the cupboard. As far as quality goes, this model ranks up there right with the Earlex and just behind the Graco Magnum. The only thing that separates these is the price, as these usually tend to run $50- 80 higher than the other models. If you are able to pick up a used paint sprayer at anything under $300 I wouldn’t hesitate to buy it as long as everything is in good working condition.
Graco Truecoat Handheld Electric Airless Paint Sprayer : One of the best models for quick jobs around the house that we have used is the Graco Truecoat Airless Paint Sprayer. This is a model that we highly recommend for those who would like something around the house or are into doing small weekend projects that require painting. One of my buddies John Wallace, who owns his own bike shop, uses this regularly to touch up the bikes that he works on.
I highly recommend the Graco Airless unit to anyone that does 3 or more small painting jobs a year. For just under $200, one can buy one of these and have it for years rather than spending $30-50 for repeated trips to Lowe’s or Home Depot when they need to rent a paint sprayer. I bought a similar model a few years back and
Milwaukee Airless Paint Sprayer M4910-21: When it comes to quality tools Milwaukee is one of the best tool companies in the world. In my early years as a contractor/ construction worker I invested in a Milwaukee power tool set and it was one of the best things that I have ever done. For over 4 years of daily work, my Milwaukee set was there through thick and thin. As they enter the paint sprayer niche, the Milwaukee Airless Paint Sprayer is one of my favorite.
I like the Milwaukee but I do have one issue and that is the amount of overspray that it produced when compared to the other models. If you are doing doors, cabinets or anything that you can just set up outside and spray it works great, but if you are painting interior you will need to make sure and tape off the area well as the Milwaukee tends to overspray a little bit. Besides this issue, the rest of the machine works great and can zip through most household jobs with no problem. Like I said previously, Milwaukee is best known for their power drills, screwdrivers and other tools and I think they made just a minor problem with the sprayer on this model. I’m sure with the amount of customer service and quality that they like to show, that this minor flaw will be fixed with their next model.
As you can see there are many important things to look at when researching paint sprayer reviews. After working in the painting and construction field for over 15 years, I highly recommend that you find the best paint sprayer for your particular needs, rather than just buying a random sprayer at the store. As the market for these items changes we will continue to update and add reviews on this site.
